Localstack athena queries stuck in RUNNING state

I’m trying to follow the tutorial for athena in localstack from here

However the start-query-execution command always results in a query thats either permanently stuck in a RUNNING state or goes to a FAILED state.
I’ve tried different versions of localstack and am experiencing the same.

Any idea what I might be missing or how I can triage this?
